Three New Dell Dimension Desktops Launched

As part of a four desktop rollout, three new Dell Dimensions were unveiled, i.e. the Dimension E520, E521 and C521 (pictured).

The E521 and C521 are both AMD-based PCs, with support of up to the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processor, while the E520 is an Intel-based one, with support of the newly-released Core 2 Duo processor.

While all come with Windows Media Center by default, they are all touted as Vista-capable. Nothing special really, but then, price is really all that matters, and Dell has certainly ensured a pretty high degree of competitiveness on that aspect via their starting prices of US$719, US$329 and US$359 for the E520, E521 and C521, respectively.

Dell Dimension 9200 Launched

(Source: Dell)

Along with the launches of the XPS 410 and Precision 390 was the unveiling of the Dell Dimension 9200. If you don’t already know, all three of them are among Dell’s first entries utilising the newly-launched Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

The D9200 will support processors up to the Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.66GHz), up to 4GB of DDR2 (667MHz) SDRAM, and up to 1TB of SATA hard disk drive space. If you are willing to cough up the cash, you can even get a 512MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX graphics card and the AGEIA PhysX physics accelerator first seen with the monstrous Renegade XPS 600.

Of course, that is if you have the dough. If you do not, or are unwilling to spend so much money, you can get one with relatively basic specs for a starting price of US$1,532.

Dell Cuts Prices, Again

Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook Picture
(Source: PCMag)

As if the Dell Inspiron E1505 wasn’t cheap enough already, Dell cuts prices even further. PCMag’s recent review of the notebook saw its price at US$999 (after an E-Value coupon), but now, Dell’s selling the dual core-powered notebook at US$699 (from an initial US$1,234). Imagine, comparable notebooks from Toshiba and HP are retailing at US$1,249 and US$1,199, respectively!

In fact, Dell’s price-slashing isn’t limited to the Inspiron E1505. Their Dimension B110 desktop is selling at a low price of US$349. And if you opt for a CRT instead of the supplied LCD, the B110’s price drops to US$299.

Anyway, these discounts come in the wake of another price-cutting spree a week or two back. Without doubt, Dell is seriously trying to turn around their rather disappointing first quarter results.

Big Discounts on Older Dell Systems

Dell Precision 380 Desktop Picture
(Source: Dell)

Now, I may not be the type that crawl the Dell website for the latest and biggest offers, but it seems there are those that are (which is really a good thing by the way). A CocoonTech.com reader reports that Dell is offering some big discounts (almost 50%) on some of its older dekstops.

The desktops on offer are the Dell Dimension 1100, 3100, 5150 and 9150, as well as the Dell OptiPlex 210L and Precision 380. They consist of Celeron D-powered desktops (Dimension 1100), Pentium 4 HT-powered desktops (OptiPlex 210L, Dimension 3100), and dual core-powered desktops (Dimension 5150, 9150).

According to Dell’s site, the offer will expire on the 3rd of May, 2006. So, if you’re interested in some cheap computers, head over to Dell’s website.

Dell Dimension E310 Review

Dell Dimension E310 Desktop Picture
(Source: Dell)

The entry-level Dell Dimension E310 is given a rather comprehensive review by CNET, but the review isn’t a favourable one.

Overall, the Dimension E310 garners an average rating of just 5.8 out of 10, with the bottom line that, “the budget Dell Dimension E310 is strong on data security but surprisingly weak on graphics and upgradability. For a true multimedia PC, be prepared to spend a little more.” This verdict isn’t particularly surprising though given the lack of both a dedicated graphics card and the prerequisite graphics card expansion slot.

Dell Dimension E510 Specs Review

Dell Dimension E510 Desktop Picture
(Source: NewsFactor)

The Dell Dimension E510 desktop was fully reviewed earlier by NewsFactor, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to add in About.com’s usual specifications review.

On the positive side, the Dimension E510’s equipped DataSafe technology and customizability seemed to score points with the reviewer, but these didn’t help much when it came to the system’s weaknesses. A few of the negative points on the Dell Dimension E510 include its lack of a bundled DVD burner and the stingy 256MB RAM equipped. Overall, About.com gave the system a 3 stars out of 5 as the system, while sufficiently solid, did not have the necessary features to go further.

Dell Doubles RAM and HDD Space

Dell Dimension 5150C Desktop Picture
(Source: TrustedReviews)

The more the merrier is what I would like to say in response to Dell’s recent announcement that it would be doubling both the RAM and hard drive space in its XPS line of desktops. In fact, even the Dimension 9150 line has been upgraded – all for free.

This move is in line with Dell’s aim of preserving “…its market share in high-end, high-margin computers…”, an aim which sparked some rumors earlier.

But in any case, the move is an excellent one for consumers seeking a relatively high-end branded desktop. While a Dell XPS will never be an Alienware, it’s good enough to satisfy most gamers out there.

Dell Dimension E510 Review

Dell Dimension E510 Desktop Picture

The Dell Dimension E510 is one of Dell’s mid-level or rather, upper mid-level desktops – depending on which of the three main configurations you choose from. With a 3.0-GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1GB RAM and a 250-GB hard drive, the higher-end E510 can clearly be used for pretty much anything except really intensive multimedia tasks, such as hard core gaming or video editing.

NewsFactor reviews the Dell Dimension E510 and finds a few positivies in the form of strong performance, dual TV tuners and a dual layer DVD-burner. But even with the above-average performance, they do not believe that its price is justified. The lack of a built-in card reader and dual core processor options probably contributed to this point of view as well. NewsFactor concludes with a rating of 3 out of 5.

Personally, I agree with NewsFactor’s analysis and only have one thing to add. I believe that their review unit’s hard drive setup is no longer the standard hard drive option Dell markets with the Dimension E510. If you visit Dell’s web site, you’ll find that Dell is actively promoting their Datasafe™ 80GB option [more on Dell's Datasafe™ technology here] as part of the E510’s basic configuration. At the time of writing of this post, an additional $11 gets you the 250GB (7200 RPM) hard drive setup NewsFactor’s review unit comes with.
