2nd Dell DJ Ditty Review

One of the last few Dell MP3 players gets reviewed again - this time by PC World Canada.

It seems to have impressed its reviewers, with a score of 76/100 being awarded to it, though that really shouldn’t be surprising considering its solid feature set and price (~US$120).

The verdict: “If you’re looking for a cheap, lightweight player to take to the gym, this is a good option, so long as you don’t want to adjust settings or find specific songs while on the treadmill. That combination of activities sounds like a recipe for a broken leg.” Agreed… really.

Dell’s Pull-Out From MP3 Player Market: Why?

Getting out of failed ventures is an acceptable move which no company can avoid, even if it is the mighty Dell. So, when Dell announced that it would be scrapping its failed Digital Jukebox line of hard-drive MP3 players recently, it really was not that surprising. As a reason for the move, Dell stated that it “…saw an opportunity to streamline and consolidate our (Dell’s) portfolio.”

But a deeper analysis of Dell’s withdrawal wasn’t provided, so it’s nice to have one from Guardian Unlimited. Guardian Unlimited does a short review (or rather, critique) of Dell’s entrance and pull-out from the hard-drive MP3 player market - underlining the iPod’s superiority in today’s United States MP3 market.

As a conclusion, Guardian Unlimited questions the viability of Dell’s online music store service. At least, that’s what I can extract from this: “No word yet on whether the Dell online music store, launched at the same time as the Dell DJ, will survive, or for how long.”

Dell DJ Ditty Review

(Source: Terralab)

With Dell’s recent announcement that it would scrap three of its Digital Jukebox MP3 players, this review almost became obsolete. Luckily, Dell announced that it would continue producing the sub-$100 DJ Ditty.

An Arbiter Online staff member reviews the Dell DJ Ditty from a non-technical standpoint. That means you will not be seeing much statistics or any benchmarks whatsoever. But, you will get a feel of how the DJ Ditty performs:

Anyhow, I really like the Ditty. It is easy to manage; all I have to do is use the Dell MusicMatch program that came with my computer to manage my device. I can remove songs easily and I can add playlists, albums, artists, etc. The battery life is great; I think I have charged it once this week and I have four bars left.

Note: An Apple iPod review by another Arbiter Online staff member was placed next to the Dell DJ Ditty review - perhaps for use as a comparison. But since both reviews were written independently (and also because of the lack of original statistics and benchmarks), I feel that the iPod review is pretty worthless as a comparison.

Three Digital Jukebox Players Scrapped

Dell Digital Jukebox Picture
(Source: PC Magazine)

Dell has stopped selling three of its Digital Jukebox hard-drive based MP3 players. While they will still sell the sub-$100 DJ Ditty, the three iPod-alternatives were dropped because they failed to be competitive with… iPods, especially the not-so-recently introduced iPod Nano.

Truthfully, the Digital Jukebox series never had any appeal to me, price or design-wise. So, cutting them off seems to be good news. After all, with Dell branching out so extensively to consumer products, it is inevitable that a few of them would fail. But if you still want to know more about Dell’s Digital Jukebox, read this review on it by PC Magazine. PCMag gave it three out of five stars.
