The 24″ Dell 2407WFP LCD screen gets another review, this time by bit-tech.net. As per the prior reviews, they found the 2407WFP to be one excellent product.

Here’s what they said about it: “Providing you get a 2407WFP with the updated firmware and panel, it is a great monitor at a competitive price, and is certainly one that you should be considering it you’re looking to get drawn into the marvels of widescreen gaming. This monitor was fantastic for gaming - widescreen gaming is the way forwards and monitors like the 2407WFP make widescreen gaming a reality. However, if you’re wanting to play games at its native resolution, you’re going to need a fast video card to hook up to it. If you don’t already have a fast video card, we will have a few that might tempt you early next week.

The only qualms that we have are with banding in synthetic tests and some slight colour compression when looking at high-resolution photographs. We had to say that, given that this price is almost the same as the Samsung 244T, you’d possibly want to consider the Samsung, which has absolutely spot-on colour reproduction - although it only has two side-mounted USB 2.0 ports and no card reader. Also, we’d argue that it doesn’t look quite as nice as the 2407WFP on your desk. ”

DigitalReviews.net had the pleasure of buying two 30″ Dell 3007WFP LCD monitors recently, and took it upon themselves to review these babies after a month of use.

For the basics, I suggest reading the prior two reviews on Dell’s 30″ offering because I’m skipping straight to their conclusion.

Besides discovering that “…the Dell 3007WFP is an amazing display…”, they said that, “Once you have played games on it which fully support the ultra sharp resolution you will never want to go back to any smaller monitors. Of course, in the gaming world you score extra by killing your opponent with jealousy and envy. As much as we like admiring glances, an early “Game Over” doesn’t work for us. We want to give our opponent a fair chance. That’s why we bought two of them…”

Of course, you could have guessed all this with their overall rating of 9.0 out of 10.

Unlike TrustedReviews’ review of the Dell 2407WFP, PC Authority’s review of the 24″ widescreen LCD monitor was full of unrestrained praise. Not only did they award the screen a perfect 6 out of 6 rating, they also gave the HDCP-compliant monitor the PC Authority Labs Winner and Excellence awards.

One reason for the (slightly) differing opinions could have been the monitors used as comparison to the 2407WFP. While TrustedReviews compared the excellent and well-priced Samsung 244T to the Dell, PC Authority used the uber-expensive Eizo FlexScan S2410W as comparison instead.

In any case, effusive praise is effusive praise - whatever the reason. But if you really need any more reason to get a Dell 2407WFP of your own, just read and reread PC Authority’s conclusion: “With all of its features, the 2407FPW’s only real drawback is that it isn’t as stylish as the Eizo. But considering the superb three-year, next-business-day, on-site warranty (with two week ‘satisfaction guaranteed’ policy as well), the extra inputs, the card reader and bargain price, it wins this Labs by a clear mile. At this price it’s a steal. It’s the best monitor we’ve ever seen both for workers and multimedia buffs alike. Buy one now.”

Supplementing a prior review of the Dell 3007WFP by CNET is a review by UK computing magazine, PC Plus.

While both reviews are generally positive towards the 30″ LCD screen, both seem to have found different problems with the monitor. While CNET found ghosting problems, DVD playback problems and a lack of S-Video ports as minus points, PC Plus pinpointed the lack of rescaling capability and the need for a dual-link DVI graphics card instead.

In any case, PC Plus, as said earlier, concludes very positively towards the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP, with an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 and a bottom line of, “this may well be the best monitor ever. If you can live with the lack of rescaling (possibly an issue for gamers and Xbox users) and aren’t budget-conscious, then go for it.”

As the replacement for the magnificent Dell 2405FPW, there was little doubt that the 24-inch UltraSharp 2407WFP was going to be a good LCD monitor offering by Dell. But how good was still an important question.

TrustedReviews explores the 2407WFP, and found it good, but not as great as it could have been. You probably wouldn’t be able to see this from the 8 out of 10 overall rating awarded to the 24-incher, but their verdict rings clear: “Dell has produced another fine large display at a good price, but minor flaws in image quality mean that unless Dell can lower its prices, we can only recommend choosing the Samsung 244T instead.”

A pity indeed, but in our opinion, the Dell 2407WFP remains a solid choice to ponder upon nevertheless.

We featured a review of the Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP just yesterday, so I hope you won’t stone me to death for featuring another review of the UltraSharp 2007WFP today. Anyway, today’s review is from ExtremeTech, and they compare the Dell 2007WFP with two other 20″ LCD monitors, i.e. the NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2 and the BenQ FP202W.

Overall, ExtremeTech found the 2007WFP to be a winner, awarding the Dell 20-incher an overall rating of 9 out of 10, plus ExtremeTech Approval. Their conclude that, “Dell ships another winner in the UltraSharp 2007WFP. Offering first rate image quality for a desktop LCD, it’s priced right and is a pleasure to use.”

With an aspect ratio of 16:10, a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, and a train-load of features, the Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP is one of the more competitive 20-inch offerings on the market. And it seems Sci-Tech Today agrees with this assertion in their review of Dell’s latest 20″ widescreen LCD monitor.

The only real downside of the 2007WFP noted by Sci-Tech is its lack of component video inputs, and they conclude that, “Dell continues to set the standard in affordable monitors, and at the $529 list price, this one is a good value. The UltraSharp 2007WFP is not only suitable for multimedia playback, but it also works well for gaming and home and office applications. It is one of the first LCD monitors with DVI-HDCP support, making it ready for high-definition playback.”

As a follow-up to their earlier review of the Dell 3007WFP 30″ LCD monitor, CNET decided to publish a comparison between the Dell 3007WFP and a comparable competitor, the Apple Cinema Display.

From the review, we can see that the Dell fought long and hard - not only winning two out of five review rounds, but also being a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Apple. But in the end, the 30″ Apple Cinema Display won by the slimmest of margins.

CNET concludes that, “Taking three out of five rounds, Apple’s 30-inch Cinema HD Display wins by an ever-so-slight margin.

Apple trumped the Dell in our DVD-playback test, displaying less digital noise and more-realistic skin tones, and it won the more technical rounds, with more-vivid colors and better grayscale differentiation. This is the monitor of choice, especially if you own an Apple computer, since the Apple OS provides additional configuration options.

That said, if adjustability is important to you, the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP has a lot more going for it; in fact, Apple doesn’t really compete in this category. Dell also delivers a better variety of input options and better text performance for everyday tasks. Finally, at $300 less than the Apple, the UltraSharp 3007WFP may be the better deal, dollar for dollar.

But if you want the best 30-inch display that money can buy, Apple’s Cinema HD Display is it.”

Much like Designtechnica’s glowing review, a Techzine reader’s personal review of the Dell 2405FPW LCD monitor showers high praise.

Last year, the reader would have awarded the 2405FPW a 9.0 out of 10 due to its relatively high price. But considering the substantial price drop that accompanied the 2405FPW this year, the reader upped the rating to a perfect 10 out of 10.

Of couse, this review is meant to provide insight into a user’s personal experience with the Dell LCD screen, and not objective evaluation. So, take that into consideration when making your decisions.

Some plasma screens experience screen burn - a phenomenon where a segment of a particular image (or screen) is burned permanently in place. But as Widescreen Gamer proves, this phenomenon (or rather, a variant of it) is not restricted to plasmas.

It seems that the Dell 2005FPW LCD monitor is often guilty of image persistence, a temporary variant of plasma TV screen burn. This is caused by, “LCD crystals becoming “over-charged” from being left in one position for too long. The longer you leave your screen on, the more likely this is going to happen.”

A solution? Well, you could make sure that you “…only have the monitor turned on when you need it. Always make sure to enable Power Saving Mode in your OS, and set it to kick in at a reasonable about of time - 10-15 minutes. This way, whenever you stop using your monitor for more than 15 minutes, the crystals are ‘resting’ and will be less likely to ’stick’.”

Personally, this is nothing new. Especially on my older LCDs, image persistence is common - no matter the brand of the screen. But, as Widescreen Gamer concludes, “Some monitors may be more prone to it than others, and if this sort of thing bothers you, you may want to keep that in mind when shopping.”
