Servers are a rarity when it comes to reviews, so we should cherish every one of them - including today’s review of the Dell PowerEdge SC430 by TrustedReviews.

Specs-wise, the SC430 is healthy, but not particularly amazing. With a 2.8GHz Pentium D processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and up to 1TB of SATA or SCSI storage (much less than 1TB for SCSI), it’ll do what most Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) need it to do, but don’t expect it to power production-level web applications.

Given its competitive price though, it scores a strong 8 out of 10 overall rating, with a favourable verdict: “The SC430 is certainly a good candidate for very small businesses on a tight budget looking for their first server. You don’t get any management or monitoring features and the embedded SATA controller doesn’t support RAID arrays but the server is very well built, it includes a good specification for the price and workers in small offices will appreciate its near silent running.”

Intel Xeon 5100-powered Dell Servers Ready for Purchase

Dell’s ninth generation servers, e.g. Dell PowerEdge 1950 and 2950, were officially announced around a month back. But at that time, only Demsey (a.k.a. Xeon 5000)-powered servers were available, with a “come again later” notice pasted for those looking for the highly anticipated top-of-the-line Xeon 5100 servers.

One month has passed, and Dell has kept its promise. Woodcrest-equipped servers are now available for purchase. Among the models equipped with Intel’s new server processor are the PowerEdge 1950, 2950, 2900 and 1955 servers. Dell Precision 690 and 490 workstations can also be equipped with Xeon 5100 processors when customized.

Of course, until full reviews come in (that is, if they do), it’s hard to say whether or not Intel will succeed at regaining market share lost to AMD in the wake of Dell’s acceptance of AMD chips in both its servers and desktops.

Dell to Power Google’s Enterprise Search Applicances

It was announced recently that Dell will be providing Google the hardware it requires for its enterprise search products.

Of course, “hardware” could be a bit too general in this case as we are actually just talking about Dell’s servers - which we think will most definitely include its recently unveiled ninth generation PowerEdge servers (two of which are pictured on the top left).

Undoubtedly, this is just one of many agreements that should spring up between the two giants after the first was made not too long back. Of course, the only reason why we’re so sure of this is because Dell and Google said so earlier.

Dell has unveiled its first set of Demsey and Woodcrest (a.k.a. Intel Xeon 5000 and 5100)-powered servers, with the Dell PowerEdge 1950 and 2950 being the rack-mounted portion of the set.

The PowerEdge 1950 is a 1U rack-mounted server, while the 2950 is a 2U. Both servers can support up to 32GB of DDR2 RAM via 8 sockets. On the HDD aspect, we’re looking at up to 600GB of internal hard disk space on the 1950 (via 2 x SAS HDDs), and up to 1.8TB for the 2950 (via 6 x SAS HDDs).

As usual, the servers will come with Dell OpenManage and your choice of operating system, from Windows Server 2003 to Red Hat and SuSe Linux.

Both servers are available now, but only with Xeon 5000 processors. If you want Woodcrest-powered servers, you’ll have to wait a month.
