Dell just launched the PowerVault MD1000 - the first (at least among the top-five storage vendors) direct-attached storage enclosure incorporating 3.5-inch SAS drives. Compared to traditional SCSI drives, 3.5-inch SAS drives can provide up to a 30% increase in data throughput and 200% the storage capacity.

The PowerVault MD1000 will also be the first storage enclosure based on the proposed Storage Bridge Bay (SBB) specifications, and can manage up to 4.5 terabytes on one shelve (for a maximum of 13.5 terabytes through 3 shelves).

Among the HDD types supported by the MD1000 include 15,000 RPM 36GB, 73GB and 146GB drives, as well as 10,000 RPM 73GB, 146GB and 300GB drives.
